Fried Long Green Peppers With Vinegar

Plus, it’s the simplest appetizer you can make. As you only need to pan-fry the green peppers in olive oil and then pour in some red wine vinegar. And when most of the strong vinegary flavor has evaporated (it only takes 2-3 minutes), you are ready to serve your super speedy appetizer!

Traditionally, these are served together with the oil they were fried in. As it’s really flavorful and great to dip your bread in. You can of course skip this. And simply serve by adding some fresh olive oil and an extra drizzle of red wine vinegar on top. Or even do both.

Another ingredient that adds a nice kick of flavor to this simple appetizer is hot red pepper flakes. But that’s totally optional, and only if you like spicy.

What Type Of Peppers To Use To Make Fried Greek Peppers

To make this dish you need long sweet peppers preferably green ones. But if you want to use red peppers it’s okay as well. They will give a more sweet-and-sour flavor. Two pepper varieties you can use to make this dish are Banana peppers, and Green Pimento Peppers.

Though you may use other varieties as well. As long as they’re not spicy but sweet. And also they need to be long in shape. If the peppers are more rounded (like bell peppers) you will need to cut them in half or even in quarters in order to cook evenly.

How To Store Fried Green Peppers

One amazing thing you can do with these peppers is to preserve them in olive oil. So you can use them inside salads, dips, pizza, and pasta sauce.

To do this, double or triple the recipe given below. Then place the fried peppers in a glass jar that fits them, and pour the oil they were fried in, into the jar as well. You can add flavorings like the hot red peppers flakes mentioned above. Or even slice 1-2 garlic cloves and add to the jar as well.

And then pour enough olive oil to cover the peppers completely. Make sure you leave some breathing space between the ingredients and the jar’s lid. Place the jar in the fridge and keep it for up to a week.

NOTE: Olive oil thickens when refrigerated so take the jar out of the fridge 30 minutes before using.

Ingredients

  • olive oil
  • 500 grams (about 6 medium-sized) sweet green peppers (you may also use red peppers)
  • 50 ml red wine vinegar
  • OPTIONAL: hot red peppers flakes to serve with

Instructions

  • Rinse the peppers and prick them a couple of times with a fork on each side. Pat them dry with paper towels.

  • Heat a generous splash of olive oil one that covers the whole bottom of a frying pan, over medium-high heat.

  • Add the peppers and fry them, turning them every minute or so. In order to get an even light brown color all over. If your stove is too strong you may want to drop the temperature to medium as the oil may pop a lot when you add the peppers.

  • Once the peppers get an even color all around, pour in the vinegar and drop the heat to a medium-low. Cook for 2-3 minutes more and then remove from heat and serve.

  • You can also add the oil from the pan and serve it over the peppers along with some extra raw olive oil on top. And if you prefer the peppers a bit more sourish serve with an extra drizzle of vinegar as well. OPTIONAL: You may serve with some hot red pepper flakes on top as well.
